PEFC Certification:
Why Does It Matter for Your Timber Frame Home?

PEFC Certification: Why Does It Matter for Your Timber Frame Home?

When planning a self-build or extension, you’ll have plenty of decisions to make, but have you considered where the timber used to build your home comes from?

Timber is a renewable construction material, but responsible sourcing matters. At Vision Development, we are a PEFC-certified timber frame manufacturer, with at least 70% of the timber we source being PEFC-certified. We also use FSC-certified boards as part of our approach to responsible sourcing.

What is PEFC certification?

PEFC stands for the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. It is an international system that promotes responsible forest management, helping to protect forests, biodiversity and the communities that depend on them.

PEFC certification also helps provide traceability through the timber supply chain, giving customers greater confidence in how certified timber is sourced and accounted for.

Why is it important when choosing a timber frame manufacturer?

Choosing a PEFC-certified manufacturer can offer several benefits:

  • Responsible sourcing: Supports recognised systems that promote sustainably managed forests and consider environmental, social and economic factors.
  • Traceability: Chain of custody certification requires businesses to keep records and controls for certified materials, helping verify claims about the timber supplied.
  • A more informed choice: Responsible timber sourcing is another factor to consider alongside the design, energy efficiency and overall specification of your home.

Certification does not mean every component in a timber frame is automatically certified, nor does it guarantee the overall sustainability of a building. It provides a recognised framework for responsible sourcing and tracking eligible materials.

What is the difference between PEFC and FSC?

PEFC and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) are separate certification systems that both promote responsible forestry and provide traceability for eligible timber products.

At Vision Development, we use both PEFC-certified and FSC-certified timber, allowing us to source materials through these certified supply chains according to availability and project requirements.

What does this mean for your project?

Vision Development designs, manufactures, supplies and erects timber frame structures for new-build homes, extensions and commercial buildings.

Our PEFC certification forms part of our commitment to responsible timber sourcing, with at least 70% of the timber we source being PEFC-certified. We believe customers should have a clear understanding of where their construction materials come from and how they are sourced.

When comparing timber frame manufacturers, it is worth asking about their certification, what it covers and how they verify the materials they supply.
