Self-Build Support:
Practical Construction Advice for Your Self-Build Project
Managing your own self-build, but want a little extra support?
Building your own home is an exciting undertaking, but managing a construction project can also be daunting, particularly if it’s your first time. From knowing which trades to book and when, to understanding what needs to happen next on site, there are plenty of decisions to make along the way.
Many self-builders choose to manage their own project rather than employ a dedicated project manager. This gives them greater control over the build and can help keep costs down, but it can also leave them with questions they’re not always sure who to turn to for advice on.
At Vision Development, we’ve spent years working with self-builders and bespoke home projects. Throughout that time, we’ve found that our customers often need advice beyond the timber-frame package itself, whether that’s understanding the next stage of construction, planning ahead for other trades or working through an unexpected issue on site.
We’re therefore exploring the introduction of a Self-Build Support service, designed to give our timber-frame customers access to practical construction advice throughout their build, without the cost of employing a full project manager.
What could Vision’s self-build support include?
The idea is simple: you remain in control of your project and manage your own trades, but have an experienced construction team to turn to when you need a little guidance.
Depending on your requirements, support could include:
- Planning the next steps: Understanding what needs to happen next and when to start arranging the following stages of construction.
- Sequencing trades: Thinking ahead about when to book bricklayers, roofers, plumbers, electricians and other trades to help avoid unnecessary delays.
- Timber-frame advice: Guidance on the interface between your timber frame and the other elements of your build.
- Practical construction queries: Talking through questions or unexpected issues that arise as your project progresses.
- Programme considerations: Reviewing your proposed construction programme and identifying areas that may need further thought.
- Making informed decisions: Helping you understand the questions to ask your contractors and what to consider before making important decisions.
Support could potentially be provided through individual consultations, ongoing advice or site visits, depending on the level of assistance needed.
The aim wouldn’t be to take over the management of your build, but to give you access to experienced construction knowledge when you need it most.
Why offer support alongside your timber frame?
As a timber frame supplier, we’re already closely involved in an important stage of your project. We work with you and your wider design team through the development, manufacture and delivery of your timber frame package, giving us a valuable understanding of your building and how the timber frame element fits into the wider construction process.
We also understand that the questions don’t necessarily stop once the frame has been erected. As the build progresses, you may need to think about the next trades, the construction sequence or how different elements of the project come together.
We’re often happy to offer guidance when these questions arise, and we’re now looking at how we could formalise that support into a dedicated service for customers purchasing their timber frame from Vision.
Is this an alternative to a project manager?
Not exactly, but it could be a useful option for self-builders who want to manage their own project without feeling they have to work everything out alone.
A dedicated project manager typically takes on a wider role in overseeing and coordinating a construction project. Our proposed Self-Build Support service would be different: you would remain responsible for managing your contractors and making decisions, with Vision available to provide practical advice and guidance where appropriate.
It wouldn’t replace the need for qualified professionals, such as structural engineers, architects or Building Control, where their input is required. Instead, it would provide an additional source of construction knowledge to help you navigate the process with greater confidence.
Help us shape our Self-Build Support service
We’re currently exploring how best to introduce this service and would be interested to hear from self-builders who are planning a new home, extension or conversion and intend to manage their own project.
If you’re considering a timber frame package from Vision, or are already working or have worked with us on your build, we’d like to understand what type of support would or would have been the most useful to you.
Would you value occasional advice when a question arises, ongoing support throughout the construction process, or the option of arranging a site visit when you need a second opinion?
Your feedback will help us shape a service that offers genuinely useful support, at the stages when self-builders need it most.
