Bungalow Converted to House in Hemel Hempstead

Self-build clients in Hemel Hempstead purchased a detached spacious bungalow in 2020 that had the potential to extend upwards creating a complete first floor adding value and space to the existing bungalow.

Vision was contracted to manufacture and install the new timber frame structures which would completely transform this bungalow.

The clients were provided with our open panel timber frame panel system which alongside the external insulated render system would achieve a U Value of 0.18.

The existing bungalow with the existing conservatory and garage removed to allow for a new garage and a new dining area which will be added to the ground floor.

The new front elevation of the home is quite contrasting to what once was there. The clients have chosen a modern design with clean lines and large windows letting in lots of natural light to the home.

With the existing ground floor remaining in-situ, the client opted for a tin hat scaffold system to protect their belongings down below as well as a temporary protection for workers whilst they install the new first floor.

A telehandler (photo above left) was used to lift the panels and materials to the new first floor level which the erectors then fit into place.

A Hiab lorry (photo above right) was used alongside the telehandler to deliver & lift the panels. Sites with restricted access do not always allow for large articulated lorries, which many suppliers stipulate must be used to deliver their products. Vision often choose the hiab lorry due to its convenience when working in built-up and rural locations.

An internal view of the ground floor with the steel structure creating the large opening to their new timber frame extension which replaced the existing conservatory.

With the new timber frame panels installed to the ground floor alongside the exiting brick walls, the joists could be fitted above creating the new floor level.

With the chipboard flooring laid, the internal first floor panels could begin to be installed. Glulam beams were used in the roof as structural support for the rafters.

Insulation, vapour barrier, and airtightness reduces the number of installation steps as well thickness, without compromising the U Value.

The timber frame now installed, external windows and doors can begin to be fitted making the new first floor structure weather tight.

Here is what our clients had to say about the service we provided for the self-build project (you can see this and other testimonials on our Reviews and Testimonials page and on our Google Business Listing).

Vision helped me change a small bungalow into a family home, they were very professional and extremely helpful as this was a project that I decided to manage. Tim and Ian assisted me during the whole process and then once it was time for the build to start Luke was appointed as the contract manager who we are more than pleased with as he was very helpful and knowledgeable. Thank you Vision.
