Know Your Insulations and Why They’re Important to Your Timber Frame Home

Timber is one of the oldest construction materials, but is continuously evolving, adapting itself to all kinds of modern construction.

Timber is versatile, sustainable, durable, strong, and environmentally friendly. It is also a natural insulator, regulating the temperature of your home to maintain a comfortable living space as well as reducing energy consumption for heating your home and boosting your new homes energy efficiency.

As important as the naturally thermal efficient timber structure, are the individual components which complete the timber frame panel. With many choices available and a host of suppliers offering varying levels of finishes, Vision wants to share their preferred choices that achieve excellent U Values and provide customers with lower running costs and energy bills.

Starting From the Outside…

Our panels feature an external breathable membrane which improves the thermal performance of the final wall build-up whilst also giving protection against weather and the continuing construction works once the frame is installed. Vision installs this membrane to the timber frame panels in our factory. Our preferred products are  Protect TF200 Thermo and Boost’R Hybrid.

Moving Inside…

Adding the insulation within our panels in our factory allows for accuracy, but also ease of install when the panels are delivered to site, reduced site waste and reduced labour costs. With a wide range of insulation options, Vision can offer a system that suits specific requirements, but also advise on the most cost effective methods using the following preferred products: Hybris, PIR and Earthwool. Example U Values that can be achieved are: 0.13, 0.14, 0.15, 0.18 – far exceeding current Building Regulations Part L.

Internal Face…

Unlike many other suppliers, Vision can supply and install the vapour control layer to the internal face of your external wall panels. An alternative is that we supply the materials for you to fit yourselves. This dual performance product offers vapour control as well as additional insulation further improving thermal efficiency of the whole build. Our chosen products are HControl Hybrid and Protect VC Foil.

Vision believe that investing in high-quality insulating products for your timber frame home will ensure you reap the benefits for years to come. These innovative products do not impose on your living space by creating bulky additions to your walls and create healthy and comfortable living spaces.

Many modern heating technologies work extremely well with timber frame homes, particularly because of the air tightness achieved. MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery) systems create movement in the air of your home, balancing out warm and cold air. They also improve air quality within your home, especially of interest for asthma and hay fever sufferers.

With ever increasing energy costs, building new homes that have a focus on ‘fabric first’ maximises the emphasis on the materials and make up of the building itself and reduces reliance of mechanical or electrical systems.

Vision invest time and money into ensuring we offer our customers the best in insulating materials offered to the market. We’ll work with your specific requirements and tailor a system that suits, giving our guidance where required.
