Timber’s Value, Versatility and Building Performance

The value, versatility and thermal performance of timber in construction are just some of the benefits which are prompting private self-builders, main contractors and developers to build using prefabricated timber frames.

The speed of construction, in all seasons, when using prefabricated timber frame structural systems offers cost savings with less labour required on site, less waste, lighter loads for reduced transport, precisely manufactured timber frame components providing a more thermally efficient building envelope which is airtight much quicker than alternative carbon-intensive construction materials.

Valuable living space is not compromised with a timber frame construction with woods naturally insulating properties, it is far simpler to achieve a low U-value with timber frame in comparison to brick or block methods. This is due to the need for a wider wall construction than that of a factory-made timber frame wall that can achieve a U-value of 0.18W/m2K with as little as a 200mm wide panel design. Other construction methods require bigger cavities with more insulation.

Using sustainable timber, from forests which are responsibly managed – Certification schemes like Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) & Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) which provide accreditations to their supply chains, offer reassurance that your chosen timber frame manufacturer is regulated and has evidence of where it sources its material.

Timber frames cost effectiveness is found with its speed of construction, usually manufactured in a controlled factory environment whilst your groundworks are undertaken on site. Due to the lightweight nature of timber frame structures, simpler and less expensive groundworks are required. The assembly of a new timber frame home is very efficient with the pre-insulated timber panels loaded to a lorry for installing in sequence with the ground floor usually installed within 1-2 days.

Insulation installed within and to the wall panels offer excellent thermal efficiency and airtightness once the structure is fully installed. Low U-values are achieved much easier with a naturally insulating timber frame alongside high-performance insulations.

You can see a range of designs achieved using timber frame from contemporary to traditional, commercial to residential all included on our regularly updated blog.

Vision Development can offer a range of construction services, including, but not limited to, timber frame supply and install, timber frame supply only or timber frame to weathered shell finish (including groundworks, roof tiling, brickwork, and windows & doors).
